A Black History Month community learning experience • Holy Covenant UCC
Saturday, February 28 • 2:30 pm
Kounter — 135 E Main St Suite 101, Rock Hill, SC 29730
As part of our continuing community learning experiences, the Racial Justice & Equity Team (RJE) invites the congregation to gather at a nearby site on the United States Civil Rights Trail. We’ll share a meal together, explore the museum that is part of the restaurant, and stand close to living history—at the restored lunch counter still in use today.
In 1961, inspired by the Greensboro Woolworth’s sit-ins, nine African American students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill sat at the segregated lunch counter at McCrory’s Five and Dime and peacefully ordered food. Arrested and given the choice to pay a fine or serve time in jail, they chose jail. “Jail, No Bail” became a national strategy—refusing to fund segregation through fines. Their courage, and the harsh treatment they endured, drew national attention and helped advance the Civil Rights Movement. Today, McCrory’s—now Kounter—honors their legacy and Rock Hill’s commitment to being a place with “No Room for Racism.”

Kounter — a restaurant and museum honoring the Friendship 9 and the ongoing call to justice.

The Friendship 9 — courage at the counter, witness in the streets, and truth that still speaks.
Kounter is an operating restaurant, and a reservation for our group is required. The only cost is the food and drink you order. Please sign up so we can plan our reservation. There will be no group transportation, so carpooling is encouraged and coordinated individually.
Prefer to sign up in person? RJE will have a table after worship beginning February 1.
