Worship

worshipstyle-2smAt Holy Covenant United Church of Christ, we celebrate God’s extravagant love in an hour-long service each Sunday with music, Scripture and a thought-provoking and relevant sermon. The order and elements of our service can vary by season and even by week, depending on the talents and hearts of our worship leaders and congregants. We sometimes begin our service by singing contemporary praise songs, but sometimes we begin in a more contemplative style, tuning our hearts to worship by listening to beautiful instrumental or vocal music. In some seasons of the year, we greet one another as we pass the peace of Christ; occasionally, we say aloud what we believe by reading the United Church of Christ statement of faith. The special music offered to enhance worship can be performed by a band, a choir, a soloist, duo or an ensemble, and it may be classical, traditional or contemporary Christian, folk, New Age or some other style. Sometimes our congregation responds to an element of worship by clapping; sometimes we just say a heartfelt “Amen.” Our minister may break into song in her sermon or stop to survey the congregation on an issue about which she is speaking.

Children are welcome to attend our services. We offer a Children’s Sermon early in the service; after that is concluded, children eight and under may leave to go to Children’s Church, from which they may be picked up after worship ends. If you prefer, children are also welcome to remain with you during the entire worship service.

On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Communion as part of the service, welcoming all to Christ’s table. Each service is followed by a time of refreshments and informal community gathering.
