Stop Calling It Christian

UCC General Minister & President Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson addressed more than 100,000 participants at the 39th Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag (German Protestant Church Day) in Hannover, Germany earlier this month. Sharing a U.S. perspective during a panel titled “With God Against Democracy”, Thompson cautioned that Christian nationalism must be viewed as extremism — not faith. “We have to stop referring to it as Christian,” she declared. “It does not rest in the tenets of the Christian faith.” Her bold message, shared alongside international leaders and theologians, echoed the Gospel call to love our neighbors and reject hate in all forms. Her presence also reaffirmed the UCC’s longstanding partnership with the German Evangelical Church.
