What fuels your call to justice, joy, service, or spirit?

This September, Holy Covenant’s theme is Live with Purpose—and we’re asking the sacred question: What’s your why? Whether it’s caregiving, advocacy, teaching, parenting, creating, praying, protesting, or healing, our purpose connects us to God’s movement in the world.

Your “why” is more than a job or a role—it’s the reason your heart beats for justice and joy. And it’s worth listening to.

📖 Start with Scripture

  • Moses (Exodus 3:11–12): When God calls Moses to lead, he doubts: “Who am I?” God doesn’t give him credentials—just a promise: “I will be with you.”
Sometimes our why begins when we trust that God’s presence is enough, even when we don’t feel ready.
  • Esther (Esther 4:14): Facing crisis, Queen Esther is told, “Perhaps you were born for such a time as this.”
Your why might arise from urgency, identity, and a moment that requires your voice and courage.
  • Jesus (Luke 4:18–19): In his first sermon, Jesus declares his mission: “to bring good news to the poor… to proclaim release to the captives… to let the oppressed go free.”
Jesus names his why: liberation, healing, and justice. What if ours echoed that same call?

📚 Read. Reflect. Renew.

Read. Reflect. Renew. is Holy Covenant’s book suggestion initiative. Each selected title invites us to grow in wisdom, deepen our faith, and connect to justice-rooted living. This month’s selections speak directly to the question of vocation and purpose:

  • Let Your Life Speak by Parker J. PalmerA gentle but powerful reflection on listening to the voice within, and discovering a vocation that aligns with your soul.
  • Braving the Wilderness by Brené BrownA courageous guide to standing alone when needed, speaking truth, and cultivating true belonging.
  • From What Is to What If by Rob HopkinsA hopeful vision of how imagination and community action can reawaken possibility and reshape our future.

🪞 What’s Your Why?

Take time this month to reflect, journal, walk, pray, or talk about the purpose that fuels you. It may not be loud—but it is sacred.
