Communications

The Creation Justice Ministry Team at Holy Covenant is committed to advocating for a sustainable and just future for all of God’s people. As followers of Christ, we recognize that the care of creation is not merely an option but a sacred responsibility woven into our faith. From the very beginning, God entrusted humanity with stewardship over the earth (Genesis 2:15). This calling is not just about conservation; it is about justice, equity, and love for our neighbors—especially those most vulnerable to environmental harm.

As a congregation within the United Church of Christ, we embrace the UCC’s call to be a Creation Justice Church, embodying five fundamental principles:

Creation Care as a Divine Mandate – Our faith teaches us that the earth and all life upon it are sacred gifts from God. As disciples of Christ, we are called to protect and restore creation, acting as faithful stewards of the land, water, and air that sustain us.

Following the Teachings of Jesus – Jesus ministered to the poor, the marginalized, and the suffering. Scripture reminds us that all creation is groaning for redemption (Romans 8:20-24). We believe that working for environmental justice is a way to live out Christ’s command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Clean Air, Water, and Soil as Essential for Life – The health of our communities is directly tied to the health of our environment. Pollution, deforestation, and climate change threaten not only ecosystems but also human well-being—especially for those in historically disadvantaged communities. As Christians, we advocate for policies and practices that prioritize sustainability and environmental health.

Environmental Justice as Social Justice – The climate crisis is not just an ecological issue; it is a moral and ethical concern. The burdens of environmental destruction disproportionately fall on communities of color, indigenous peoples, and those living in poverty. From systemic racial inequalities to the lingering effects of colonialism, creation justice intersects with many forms of injustice. As a progressive Christian congregation, we stand in solidarity with those who suffer most from environmental harm and advocate for a more just and equitable world.

Rooted in Our Church’s History and Mission – The United Church of Christ has long been a leader in environmental justice. The UCC’s Commission for Racial Justice played a pivotal role in launching the modern environmental justice movement, recognizing that pollution and climate change are deeply intertwined with racial and economic inequality.

As part of this legacy, we remain committed to the ongoing work of justice, inclusion, and care for creation.
